Scope and Contents

'Ever unfading gratitude to Your Excellency and all you have done for me and my country. Ofori Atta’.

Guggisberg left the Gold Coast for the last time in April 1927. Nana Sir Ofori Atta (1881-1943) became Omanhene of Akyem Abuakwa in 1912, and was the most influential traditional ruler in the Gold Coast, a member of the Legislative Council 1916-1943, and of the Executive Council shortly before his death. He led the group of African leaders from the Gold Coast which visited Guggisberg’s neglected grave at Bexhill in August 1934 and arranged for an appropriate memorial to be erected. It is puzzling to know how Canham obtained this document, since it was presumably delivered to Guggisberg, who died when Canham was still a student.
