Grave of Lieut. Askwith, 1885
Scope and Contents
203 x 150 mm. A view showing Lieutenant Askwith’s grave and headstone in the cemetery situated on the mainland shore north east of Quarantine Island near the harbour entrance. The head piece reads ‘In memory of Lieut. W.B. Askwith R.E. aged 26 years killed at Suakin 27th Feb 1885’. Askwith was an engineer concerned with placing mines in advance of the redoubts and was killed when a faulty mine he was examining exploded.
