The town of Suakin relied almost entirely on the wells to the south west of the town for its water; with the arrival of a large military force these wells, which although guarded were outside the main fortified area, were totally inadequate. Water for the troops was therefore condensed in plants on Quarantine Island, although the results often left much to be desired.
