No. 5 Condensing Pier [Quarantine Island], 1885
Scope and Contents
187 x 141 mm. A view looking along one of the piers on the south east side of Quarantine Island with ships at anchor at the right of the print. A notice in the foreground reads ‘Officers only are permitted to bathe from this pier’. The town of Suakin relied almost entirely on the wells to the south west of the town for its water; with the arrival of a large military force these wells, which although guarded were outside the main fortified area, were totally inadequate. Water for the troops was therefore condensed in plants on Quarantine Island, although the results often left much to be desired.
