Fishing trawlers at Larnaca [i.e. Lárnax], 1965
Scope and Contents
216 x 172 mm. Showing fishermen at work aboard their boat with the Larnaca waterfront in the background. The caption on the reverse of the photograph continues: '... on the southern shores of Cyprus. The site of Larnaca dates back to several hundred years B.C. when the Greeks established Kition which later (12th century) became one of the city kingdoms of the island. The most famous son of Kitium is the founder of the Stoic School of philosophy in Athens Zeno of Kitium. Here also Kimon the renowned Athenian General lost his life against the Persians, but his death was kept secret until victory had gone to the Athenians. Hence the saying 'Even dead he was victorious'. Memorials of both stand in the squares of the town'.
