View of Roseau from St Aromant on the east, 1879 - 1913

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y307G/28

Scope and Contents

155 x 101 mm. A good clear view looking towards Roseau and the sea from the hills behind the town. In the foreground is the Roseau River with fields planted out with lime trees beyond. The plantation is probably part of Rose and Company's Bath Estate. The company was established in Dominica in the 1860s by Laughlan Rose, a merchant from Leith, who apart from supplying limes to British ships, pioneered their use in soft drinks. In 1875 he set up the first factory in Dominica for the extraction of lime juice.
