Basuto girls, 1930 - 1950

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y305O/110

Scope and Contents

126 x 128 mm. The caption continues: '...wear what they call "tetana", i.e. a deep fringe made of thin leaved weeds. These they tie round their waists. To make it they take a strip of skin cured and softened, cut this an inch wide, take a quantity of the weed, tear off the outer weeds, leaving only the middle. Women with well-greased hands roll this up and down their red-clayed thighs.' Although uncredited in this album, an identical photograph credited to Killie Campbell is held in an album at the Killie Campbell Africana Library under the reference Album D34/001-197.Basutoland Customs.BRN 310846.
