Outside Johannesburg, 1880 - 1889
Scope and Contents
360 x 292 mm. Showing early mining activity near Johannesburg, with trolley lines leading to excavated trenches and a few huts in the background. Exact location unidentified. The meteoric rise of the city of Johannesburg dates from as late as 1886 when, on 8th September the area of G.C. Oosthuizon's farm Langlaagte was declared an open gold mining area, so this photograph would have been taken in the very early days of the city.
