Scope and Contents

204 x 152 mm. A view from a hillside looking down on Havelock which lies near the Transvaal border, with mining buildings in the foreground and a small Swazi Kraal of thatched huts beyond. 'Havelock' is also printed on the photograph itself.

The following information is supplied by Huw M. Jones: The view is probably of Nottingham Peak, and the likely date is 1889. Havelock was the name given to a mineral concession (41D) obtained from Ngwenyama Mbandzeni on December 12, 1886, covering 7,448 morgen. It was named after Sir A.E. Havelock, the Governor of Natal, as the owners were a syndicate composed primarily of Durban businessmen. Nottingham Peak was the name given to the first gold reef discovered on the Havelock concession. It was four kilometers east-south-east of the asbestos mine at Bulembu (formerly Havelock Mine). Machinery and plant were bought in early in 1889 and the batteries started milling in November 1889. By July 1890 they closed as the ore ran out. The batteries were leased to the owners of the Devil's Reef between January and May 1891. In 1895, the Nottingham Peak mine was taken over by the Piggs Peak Development Company and Crushings made between May and September. The battery seems to have been known on occasion as 'Havelock Battery'; certainly it was the only one on the Havelock concession. Unless there is evidence to the contrary, I would think that the photograph was taken in 1889.
