Biographical / Historical
William Clark Haines (1810-1866) was born in Hampstead, England, and attended Charterhouse and Caius College, Cambridge (B.A., 1833). After practising surgery in England, he travelled to Port Phillip, Victoria, in the early 1840s, and settled in the Barrabool Hills, Geelong district, where he carried out farming until 1850. Thereafter, he was Colonial Secretary, 1854-1855, Premier, 1855-1857 and 1857-1858, and Treasurer, 1861-1863, of the Colony of Victoria. He died in South Yarra on 3 February 1866.
