Royal Mail Stamps, 1997

Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.10275/3/6/7

Scope and Contents

In 1996/1997, Royal Mail commissioned Spitting Image Productions Limited to create a set of stamps on the theme of horror. SIPL produced two stamps featuring plasticine model illustrations, one of Bela Lugosi as Dracula and the other of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster. The photographic images of these models were taken by SIPL staff member, Steve Bendelack. These designs were ultimately rejected by Royal Mail, as Roger Law refused their request that he be solely credited for the work, rather than SIPL, in order to save Queen Elizabeth II from embarrassment. However, Walsall Security Printers Limited, impressed by the work, printed a bundle of 100 sheets of the stamps without the price and the Queen's head (SI/493 (a) and (b)).

The contents of the visifile include, but are not limited to: examples of the stamp sheet; an advice note and its duplicate from Walsall Security Printers; two 35mm photographic slides with each containing images of both stamp designs; and a large piece of cardboard that has the Royal Mail logo design upon it.
