Scope and Contents

Scripts for all regular episodes of the 18 series of Spitting Image, along with the script for the original, unaired 1983 pilot episode; and scripts for an American pilot that was never made. There are various forms of scripts present, including: rehearsal, camera, production, and post-production. These different scripts represent various stages or aspects of an episode's production. However, post-production scripts are the most common, and the other forms of scripts only appear in the files for the first five series.

Accompanying some of the scripts are other documentation, such as episode running orders, writers' record sheets and related paperwork, and musicians' payment authority documents.

Conditions Governing Use

Between series 1 and 13 (1984 to 1992), writers for the show gave Spitting Image Productions Limited an 'exclusive licence' to the visual rights over their work, and to exploit it by other means, such as books and audio recordings. This agreement between SIPL and its writers was made with the understanding that this licence would be used by Central Independent Television.

Between series 14 and 18 (1993 to 1996), writers handed to SIPL the copyright over their work.

As a consequence of the agreements made above, copyright ownership over the scripts is mixed. ITV plc appears to own copyright for some of the content and the formatting of the scripts. However, in regards to the creative elements in the scripts (i.e. the sketches), depending on the series, writers either retain their rights over their work and SIPL/Roger Law possesses a licence or the latter owns the rights.
