Visitors' book of Alice Hobley, 1987 - 1992
Scope and Contents
A photocopy of Alice Hobley's visitors' book from her time in East Africa, containing 38 pages of signatures and an inserted letter from Lord Kitchener to C.W. Hobley. Most of the signatures date from 1906-1919, but there are three from 1922-1923. There are accompanying manuscript and typescript notes made by A.T. Matson and T.H.R. Cashmore in 1987, regarding the identification of the names in the book (7 pages), and a manuscript letter to D.H. Simpson from Cashmore, 21 September 1987 (3 pages). There are also 14 typescript pages of notes compiled by D.H. Simpson with reference to Matson and Cashmore's work, May 1992, listing and where possible identifying the names of the signatories, accompanied by an extract from a book relating to Kitchener.

Biographical / Historical
Alice Mary Turner married Charles William Hobley (1857-1947) in 1905. Charles Hobley was sent to Mombasa by the Imperial British East Africa Company in 1890. He became a First Class Assistant under the Foreign Office, and served the government in Kenya from 1894 until his retirement in 1921.
