Ashanti weavers, Gold Coast [i.e. Ghana], 1924
Scope and Contents
The caption on the reverse reads: 'Ashanti Weavers, Gold Coast. Examples of the Ashanti Weavers' Art are on sale at Wembley where craftsmen may be seen at work on the curious looms depicted hereon'.
Guggisberg stated: 'From Coomassie running up the long red motor-road we plunge into real native customs in the pictures painted at Mampong. Two of the most striking pictures are the types of priest and drummer, the former with the background of harmattan mist in the great forest. The weavers, the potters and the metal workers are all wonderfully true in the way they convey the reality of things as they are' (Guggisberg, Gold Coast News, no. 25).
