Official group, Kelantan, circa 1914, 1914
Scope and Contents
286 x 237 mm. Showing a uniformed group standing on a parade ground, probably at Kota Bahru [i.e. Baharu], with spectators in the background. Figures identified in the group are: William LANGHAM-CARTER (1869-1940); Malayan; Civil Service 1890-1924; British Adviser, Kelantan (-15?); Herbert Alfred ANDERSON (1875-); Australian Army 1895-1905; Inspector of Police, Federated Malay States 1905; Assistant Superintendent, Straits Settlement 1910; Chief Police Officer, Kelantan 1913-circa 1917; Thomas Watts CLAYTON (1877-); Malayan Civil Service 1900-1932; acting Assistant Adviser, Kelantan 1911-1914. Clayton left Kelantan at the end of March 1914, which offers a terminal date for the photograph. The group of uniformed Malays has not been identified but they are possibly members of the police since Kelantan had no standing military forces. The figure standing beside Langham-Carter is Sultan MUHAMMAD IV (d 1920) who reigned until 1920; to the left of the child stands the future Sultan ISMAIL (d 1944) who reigned from 1920-1944 and beside him IBRAHIM (circa 1898-1960), Sultan from 1944-1960.
