Kaffir Kraal, Zimontos [historic title], 1890

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3052A/120

Scope and Contents

Showing a wooden stockade with tightly packed thatched huts beyond and on the granite outcrop above. The exact location of Zimonto’s (Somoto’s) Kraal is not specified, but it presumably lay a short distance north of Fort Victoria. See Y3052B/8-9 for F.H. Surridge's photograph of the village, which he described in ‘Mashonaland and Matabeleland’ R.C.I. Proceedings, Vol XXII, 1890-1, 'Somoto's village, by the soft red rays of a tropical setting sun, was a picture not soon to be forgotten. In the distance one could dimly discern the forms of dark human beings, walking about uneasily upon the tops of the huge rocks upon which the village is standing ... the small huts of mushroom shape were dotted about upon the rocks wherever a site was available...' Photograph probably taken about August 20.
