Biographical / Historical

The club was founded as the Cambridge University Swimming Club in 1855. Training initially took place in the River Cam at the University Bathing Sheds at Grantchester Meadows but from 1906 moved to a newly built pool at the Leys School. The club entered galas against London swimming clubs and ran inter-collegiate competitions. The first men's water polo Varsity Match was held in 1891 and the first men's swimming Varsity Match in the following year. The electrical engineer Sir Charles William Oatley (1904-96) was team captain in 1924. It is not certain when the Cambridge University Ladies Swimming Club was founded but the first ladies' swimming Varsity Match was held in 1921. The men's and ladies' clubs merged in 1970. The club's social programme is run under the auspices of the Tadpole Swimming Club which was created in 1924 for more recreational swimming. In 1997 the club changed its name to the Cambridge University Swimming and Water Polo Club. Further information about the club's activities is on its website (http://cuswpc.co.uk) together with a history of the club from which these introductory notes were drawn.
