Conditions Governing Access

From the Management Group:

The University Archives are generally freely available to the holder of a reader's ticket for the Manuscripts Reading Room at Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge CB3 9DR. Restrictions on access are imposed on certain categories of sensitive record: financial, governmental and personal, by order of the originating body or under data protection legislation. Access information, including opening hours and how to obtain a reader's ticket, appears as part of the Library's web site (www.lib.cam.ac.uk).

Biographical / Historical

The society was formed in 1872 to ''promote and to publish critical researches into the language and literatures of the Indo-European group of nations, and to promote philological studies in general''. Its members have been drawn from both the university (predominantly senior members) and beyond. The society's activities have centred around a speaker programme delivered by both members and visitors. It has also published ''The Cambridge Classical Journal: proceedings of the Cambridge Philological Society'' of which SOC.87.2.1. is a copy of the first volume. In the club's early history the expenses of their activities were, in part, defrayed by the dividends of an investment in stocks. Further information about the club is on the website of the Cambridge University Classics Faculty at http://www.classics.cam.ac.uk/faculty/research_groups_and_societies/cambridge_philological_society/.
