Conditions Governing Access
The University Archives are generally freely available to the holder of a reader's ticket for the Manuscripts Reading Room at Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge CB3 9DR. Restrictions on access are imposed on certain categories of sensitive record: financial, governmental and personal, by order of the originating body or under data protection legislation. Access information, including opening hours and how to obtain a reader's ticket, appears as part of the Library's web site (www.lib.cam.ac.uk).
Biographical / Historical
The society is known to have existed in its current form since 1961. It is intended to promote the works of Sir W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan although it also occasionally performs light opera and musical theatre by other composers. Performances are pitched at a variety of levels: there is a staged Lent term show (usually at the ADC Theatre) and, from 1971, a summer show (usually at the Minack Theatre, Porthcurno, Cornwall); semi-staged concert performances; and completely unstaged and unrehearsed social ''sing-throughs''. Other social activities include May Week garden parties and annual dinners. Further information about the club's activities is on its website at http://www.gands.org.uk/.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The first tranche of records was transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 15 January 2008. Of this, a proportion of items in SOC.83.3 and probably SOC.83.4 had been deposited by Dr J. Mander (Newnham College), Senior Treasurer, with the Manuscripts Department on 22 June 1995. A further deposit in ca 1999 had been made by the then society secretary, Holly Stout (Corpus Christi College). Both had been given the classmark Ms.Add.9313. On 18 Dec. 2014, a further significant transfer directly to the University Archives was made by Zowie Sweetland (Homerton College), society secretary and Harley Jones (Selwyn College), former society librarian. This material was catalogued as 83.1.1A, 4-5; 83.2.A-C, 5-9; 83.3.1.2, 3 (addnl.), 5.2-6, 6.2-4, 7; 83.4.1-12.
