Biographical / Historical

The society was established in 1968 by Richard Wildman (Clare College) and Gavin Stamp (Gonville and Caius College) and held its first ''Grand Excursion'' on 26 October that year. Stamp seems to have provided much of the impetus for the society, holding both the posts of secretary and, from circa 1970, president. The club was open to junior and senior members and existed ''to foster an interest in the Architecture, Arts and other aspects of the Victorian Age''. It ran a speaker programme; visits to Victorian institutions, domestic dwellings, and suburbs in the East-Anglian and London region; and social events. The society's patrons were Nikolaus Pevsner, John Betjeman, and George Kitson Clark. The club was much less active in the 1971-3 period until a revival of 1974-5 led by Stephen Wildman (Queens' College). It is thought that the club was defunct by the time the records were deposited in 1980.
