Biographical / Historical

The union was established as the Cambridge Union for Private Prayer in March 1848. It had the object of united private prayer, initially in support of a Church Missionary Society mission to China, but then also for wider issues selected by the committee. Members prayed between 6 and 7 am on the first Saturday of each month wherever they happened to be. To begin with members were ordinands but this evolved to include any Anglican member of the university... and at its height in 1898 the union had 1909 members on its books. The union's committee consisted of both senior and junior members. It was formally wound up in February 1934 with outstanding funds divided between Ridley Hall and Westcott House.
