Research notes: Box 1, 1937 - 1955
Scope and Contents
Notes collected from circa 1937 to the mid-1950s with a bearing on the history of Cambridge in its civic aspect. Used by HMC, inter alia, in the preparation of her 'City of Cambridge', Victoria County History Volume III, 1959.
Notes are tied into numbered bundles which correspond to the following themes:
1) notes on civic items in Cambridge - baliffs, treasury and treasurers accounts, incorporations, clubs, libraries, newspapers and some houses. Also contains notes on the history/function of institutional buildings: Guildhall, Shire Hall, Bank House;
2) notes on individual people, familes and their family trees;
3) notes on historical Mayors, MPs and elections;
4) notes on various towns and boroughs;
5) notes relating to John Mortlock (1755-1816, MP for Cambridge) and his family;
6) bibliographic notes and book lists;
7) miscellaneous notes;
8) notes on economics and social issues;
9) notes on topography and pavage;
10) notes on Addenbrookes Hospital and hygiene;
11) notes on religion, charities and churches.
Also contains 1 box titled 'Alderman' which contains cards listing the names of various people who lived and/or worked in Cambridge in the 18th - 19th centuries. Most appear to be MPs, Mayors, Freemen or Aldermen.
