Research notes, 1920 - 1959
Scope and Contents
These notes were originally stored in a small filing cabinet. They were particularly bulky and not all worthy of permanent preservation. They were pruned in 1998 by Janet Sondheimer, a former pupil of HMC's, who based this task on her own knowledge of HMC's work, leaving the 3 boxes listed here, which are likely to be of use only for investigation into HMC's research methods. This catalogue entry, including remarks concerning the individual boxes of notes, reproduces JS's notes more or less verbatim. JS's General observations: HMC used slips of paper which she cut to uniform size, often from whatever was to hand, to record her findings from manuscripts and printed sources. These were then filed in envelopes, many of them used and therefore postmarked, labelled by subject. This habit, combined with the dates of her published articles etc, thus makes it possible to arrive, if only very approximately, at the time-span over which a particular series of notes was compiled.
