Letters to Aelfrida Tillyard from Alethea Graham: File 5, 1935 - 1937
Scope and Contents
The original envelope was labelled in Aelfrida Tillyard's hand: 'AG letters from abroad - S. Africa 1936-7', though some of them predate 1936. Letters of August 1935 are written on board ship and from Norway while on a holiday [for convalescence? Alethea left West Malling in July 1935 - see Aelfrida's diaries] with Lilian [an acquaintance from St Mary's, West Malling?]. Letters of October 1936 are written while on board ship for South Africa; from Nov 1936 - Jan 1937 they are addressed from the House of Bethany, Plumstead, Cape Province, South Africa; from 17 January to 8 December 1937 they are mostly addressed from St Cuthbert's Mission, also from Holy Cross Mission, Flagstaff, East Pondoland.
