Letters to Aelfrida Tillyard from her daughter Alethea Graham, 1929 - 1958

 Series
Reference Code: GBR/0271/GCPP Tillyard 3/1

Scope and Contents

Letters for a large part of the 29 years covered by this series were written from South Africa, where Alethea worked as a missionary at St Cuthbert's Mission, Tsolo, Cape Province, from 1937 to 1953. They concentrate mostly on missionary work, daily events at St Cuthbert's, family matters, everyday trivia, current reading matter etc and include very little on spiritual matters [this appears to have been restricted to Alethea's correspondence with Father O'Brien, who appears to have acted as a spiritual adviser for her - see GCPP Graham A1 4/1 for his letters to her]. The letters also include many written from Paris while Alethea was working for 'Semaine a Paris', 1930-31; and some from St Mary's Abbey, West Malling, Kent, which Alethea entered as a postulant in September 1933.
