Personal diaries: Volume 73, 1955-10-10 - 1957-02-25
Scope and Contents
St John's Home, Oxford. Much trivial detail from the daily round at St John's. Still recognises the 'clamour of selfhood'. Occasional days of silence, especially Fridays, though 'Even my ordinary Rule is beyond me at the moment' and there are sometimes long gaps between diary entries. Is moved to a nursing ward for observation in Oct. 1956. Further conflict with Sr. Superior, various misunderstandings - Alethea smoothes things over. Feb 1956 - Alethea moves to 35 Marston Street, Oxford. May 1956 - AT speaks to a Women's Meeting at the Wesley Memorial Hall. Mid-June - mid-July 1956 - trip to Cambridge with the usual round of visits and callers. Deaths of residents and old friends and acquaintances, including Lilian Whitehouse, Gwen Raverat, and Dr Wynn - considerable retrospective on her relationship with him. Visitors include Alethea, Marjorie Milne, Julius. Jan. 1957 - Cambridge City Council wish to demolish AT's cottages in Staffordshire Street, Cambridge. Feb. 1957 - Eustace and Julius both to have operations. Pasted in at back: 12 b/w photographs, mostly great-nieces and nephews, also nephew Walter's wife Bodil; Alethea; AT's goddaughter; and Mina and Julius.
