Personal diaries: Volume 72, 1954-07-01 - 1955-10-08
Scope and Contents
St John's Home, Oxford. Still following the religious life as far as circumstances and her health permit, though the raptures of previous years are less evident. Some conflict with the Sr. Superior. Occasional days are 'transparent of eternity'. Deaths of other residents and old friends. Summer 1954 - a fortnight at SHVT Convent at South Leigh, of which a week is spent in retreat. Dr Wynn still writes. Visitors include Bishop Barkway ('The Anteater'), Alethea, Julius, Hilda Harrison, Eustace (who is 'maturing wonderfully'), and Marjorie Milne [ex-Perse Girls' School and Girton - detailed report of their discussion on matters religious]. Dec 1954 - the Hope House sisters are to take Wetenhall Cottage for their convalescents again. Writing: finishes 'Naomi da Costa, Prophetess', a novel, Nov. 1954. Ends this volume with thoughts on Alethea at 47 - 'fully mature' etc. At back: list of 'books read at South Leigh'.
