Personal diaries: Volume 71, 1953-06-17 - 1954-06-30
Scope and Contents
Southea Vicarage - St John's Home Oxford. Moves from Southea in July 1953 to St John's Home, Oxford - 'I am happier here than I have been since I left Tymawr'. She is to lead the contemplative life there as far as circumstances allow. Descriptions of the place and its residents; lists her proposed routine. Occasional visions and spiritual experiences. Renewed 'interest in people' - much of this volume is devoted to describing the other residents of St John's and her dealings with them. Visits from Alethea. Alethea is rushed to hospital with what turns out to be a peptic ulcer; convalesces at Hope House. Alethea had intended to return to South Africa but instead becomes General Secretary of the Cowley, Wantage and All Saints Association, based in London, and is to share a flat with Prof Margaret Deanesly. AT always thinks of Agatha on Feb 23/24 - 'I feel her waiting for me'. Writing: begins to write 'Memory Pictures' for The Watchword. Continued arthritic pain in knees; writing is a little shakier again; gaps between diary entries are sometimes longer now. At front: vital statistics again as at 1 June 1954.
