Personal diaries: Volume 60, 1942-03-28 - 1943-02-07
Scope and Contents
Tymawr. March 1942 - receives an 'authentic message, in symbolic form, from beyond' [ie from Agatha]. Worsening relations with the Mother: further conflict over AT's lack of 'interior silence' and, as AT is now the only remaining Tertiary, she feels that the Mother wants to leave her out, mark the difference between the community and outsiders; even begins to doubt the Mother's sanity. 'Talking' days now appear to be more rare than silent ones - wonders whether she will called to even more silence. Continued illness: heart-strain, gasto-enteritis, nephritis, uraemic poisoning. Visitors include Sylvia Hughes (sister of a Girtonian), niece Constance, and Julius. Alethea leaves Maritzburg [too much strain?] and returns to St Cuthbert's; perhaps she is not fitted by temperament for the religious life?; lengthy contemplation of Alethea's vocation or lack of it.
