Oxford - Tymawr. Still at St Benedict's. Alethea sails for South Africa to be a missionary at St Cuthbert's Mission, Tsolo, C.P. Discussions with Father Cary; High Mass at Cowley; still trying to rid herself of 'besetting sins', being too emotional etc; retreat with Father Cary; dream about the devil. 19 Nov. 1936 - goes to Tymawr - strictish rule - lots of silence, hard bed; Hilda Harrison is also there (fellow resident from Torquay); daily round of the convent; Father Amos to be her confessarius; Fridays are completely silent; believes the 'clamour of selfhood' would die down with even more silence; Father Cary ordered to rest - no correspondence allowed; the Reverend Mother gives her 'the Rule on which Tertiaries base their individual Rule'; possibility of living long term at Tymawr as a tertiary; austere personal Lenten rule. Occasional comment on the outside world - Spanish Civil War, Wallis Simpson and the abdication. Letters from Alethea. Gives French lessons to Miss Harrison. Visit from Juan Mascaro.
