Scope and Contents
Fordfield - Leiston - Fordfield. Personal: Anthony desires some sort of mother-son relationship; Dr Joan Cooper is becoming a close friend as well as medical adviser; AT has a growth in her womb and thinks she may have cancer - Dr Joan thinks not, though she will need an operation. Children: Alethea is given a bursary at Katherine Low Settlement, Battersea; Agatha sees Humphrey frequently but does not wish to marry him; Hugh Janisch proposes to Agatha but she turns him down; Alethea was fond of John Wedgwood but does not wish to marry him; Alethea goes on retreat to Leiston; AT believes her well and happy again. Family: mother very ill indeed in Feb 1932 but well enough by July to go on holiday. Visitors include Fidelio; Joan Cooper; Miss Allan; Helen Megaw. Places visited include Burton Bradstock, Dorset (holiday); London; Letchworth (visiting aunts). Activities include further talks on mysticism; Cambridge Steam Laundry business; summer outings. Writing: Dr Joan Cooper is "Nurse Sarah Rose" in a new novel; "The Phoenix" is sent to Hutchinsons [this novel eventually became 'The Approaching Storm' and contains a story within a story, namely 'The Man who Ran Over a Child']. Religion: meditation in Little St Mary's; church at St Columba's; a further retreat at St Mary's Abbey, Leiston, Aug 1932 - still pondering a vocation. Pasted in at back: news cuttings and photographs, including a news cutting re a 50 years service testimonial to Jane Patten at the Cambridge Steam Laundry and photographs of Alethea and AT.
