Scope and Contents
Leiston - Fordfield. Personal: attempts to curtail the relationship with Anthony Wrightson, in spite of the advice of many that she should marry him, and he becomes bitter. Children: Agatha has her tonsils removed; Alethea goes to London to look for a job; Humphrey is keen on Agatha but she doesn't care for him; Agatha returns to Girton; Alethea continues to have physical pain, possibly gynaecological problems; Alethea is becoming interested in religion. Family: mother becoming much frailer and is seriously ill in Feb 1932. Visitors include Miss Allan, Fidelio, Nadja, Helen Megaw, Miss Wodehouse [Mistress of Girton], Dr Joan Cooper. Activities include Cambridge Steam Laundry business; University Library trips; teaching new pupils; summer outings. Writing: book reviews for 'Theology'; discussions with SCM Press and SPCK; September 1931, begins writing a ‘night-story’ entitled ‘Peace Within Thy Walls’. Religion: church at St Columba's and St Botolph's; occasional spiritual experiences and desperate longing for same; some meditation; 3 weeks at St Mary's Abbey, Leiston, in Suffolk, a retreat house, in Sep. 1931, and leanings towards Anglo-Catholicism; further visit to St Mary's in Oct 1931; longing for time for solitude and meditation. Pasted in at back: 6 photographs including Alethea, Agatha, AT and Eustace.
