Scope and Contents

Fordfield. Family events: 'Swab' (younger brother Eustace) has diptheria and goes to an isolation hospital; brother Julius gets a first class in his examinations; father becomes President of the Free Church Federation. Activities include Band of Hope meetings, a 'freshers'' party, tea in Julius' rooms, a dress fitting at Sayle's for a dress for the Verralls' dance, Sunday School teaching and outings, parties, sport, Italian lessons, the Eadens' dance at the Masonic Hall, Temperance Association meetings and speeches on temperance, meetings of the Free Church Girls' Guild, Women's Liberal Federation meetings in London, Cambridge May Week activities, summer cycle rides, teas and tennis parties, garden parties at Girton and Downing Colleges, attending a debate at Newnham College, teaching Dorothy Smith. Visitors and those visited include the Skinners, the Douglasses and Mary Dykes and Dr Dykes at Westminster College; Pattie Craske and other Newnham women; Helen Verrall; the Coneybeares; Ruth Schechter (the Schechters leave for New York where Dr Schechter is to become head of the Jewish seminary); Miss Morgan (Matron of Addenbrooke's Hospital); Lucy Longstaffe; and students from Homerton College. Male companions include cousin Percy, Roy Page, Clayton (Julius' friend), Clive Carey, Alfred Ewing, Cameron [of Caius College], and John Forbes. The relationship with Hans Heinrich Peter ('Enrico') appears to come to an end. Places visited include Farnham, Surrey; London; Hunstanton, Norfolk; and Worthing, Sussex. Writing appears to have in abeyance during the last year or two. Religious matters: discussion with Ruth Schechter, visit to a synagogue with Ruth Schechter, another spiritual or mystic experience in Jan. 1902. By Sep 1902 AT is longing to get married. Pasted in at back: 3 sepia photographs - picnic at Holkham, Norfolk 25 August 1902 (the male figure standing in the middle of the photograph is Herbert George Ibberson, family friend) and Julius in Germany September 1902.
