Fordfield. This volume is occasionally annotated in the margins by AT at later dates. Personal events: AT takes Junior Local Examination in Dec 1898; AT is baptised in April 1899. Family events: death of "Dear" (maternal grandmother) on Dec 1st 1897; brother Julius is awarded a scholarship to Caius College in 1899. Visitors and those visited include Uncle Ernest and Aunt Norah in Farnham, Surrey; Molly and Marjorie Fordham; Mary Cliff; and Lucy Longstaffe. Male friends include James Stark; cousin Percy (who proposes); Howard (an undergraduate at Caius College) and Archie Stent (a distant cousin and an undergraduate at King's College). Places visited include Farnham, Surrey; Royston, Herts.; Seaford, Sussex; Walberswick and Southwold, Suffolk; and Hunstanton, Norfolk. First specific references to things spiritual. Occasional comment on political matters and current affairs, particularly the Boer War. Activities include teaching Sunday School boys; sport; concerts; dances; attending the opening of Westminster College, Cambridge, attending a debate at Newnham College. April 1900 - begins lessons with Ernest Harrison of Trinity College. Writing has begun in earnest: sends a story to a competition in a magazine; father encourages her to write; "I wish to be a celebrated authoress"; often mentions her story-writing; gives a list of stories already written by early 1900. Pasted in at back: pencil sketch of "Dick. After James Stark" [dog] and a faded photograph of "Romulus" [cat].
