Letter from B[arbara Leigh Smith] to Bessie Parkes, headed 'Sunday night', 1849
Scope and Contents
Barbara asks Bessie to send her Lady Shelley’s letter. She urges Bessie to read ‘Man’s power over himself to prevent or control insanity’ [John Barlow 1849], in particular p. 102 relating to the ‘superior proportionate size of women’s brains’. She is reading H[erbert] Spencer’s Psychology. She is unlikely to get to Tenby. She suggests Bessie ‘lecture about the Laws to the Halstead people’. Barbara says she may illustrate a poem for Tennyson. She would very much like to go travelling with Bessie.
