Scope and Contents

Papers relating to Marjorie Tappan's PhD at Columbia, her work in Britain while she completed the doctoral examinations, and offers of work immediately afterwards, as well as a later communication from Columbia.
Included are:
Registration, course credits and certificates etc. 1916-20.
Admission to candidacy 1920.
Two letters concerning MT's possible appointment as an instructor at Vassar (from Edwin Seligman 1919), and to a fellowship at a Belgian university (from the Dean's Office 1920). Two letters from Esther Lowenthal of Smith College, the first urging MTH to lecture there if Columbia made no offer (1920), the second alerting MTH to a possible vacancy at the college (1922).
Letters of introduction from Edwin Seligman to Professor F Edgeworth, All Souls College Oxford, Professor J M Keynes, King's College Cambridge, and Mr Sidney Webb, 41 Grosvenor Rd London. All 23 October 1920, with envelopes. These are in effect testimonials for MTH. Letters of introduction from H E Soper, University of London to The Royal Statistical Society 18 January 1920 and from Bernard Pares, King's College London to Baron Meyendorf and to 'Raffi' (in one envelope) 24 November 1920.
Two letters from Edwin Seligman to Marjorie Tappan about her contribution to the Encyclopedia of Social Sciences 23 December 1927 and 18 January 1928.
