Case of disputed election of University Vintner, 1728-06 - 1728-07
Scope and Contents
The election was fought between John Bacon and Thomas Whitstones. The document first recites the grace of 10 Oct. 1698 against disorderly proceedings at elections, and false claims to voting rights. It continues: 'On casting up the poll , A Copy whereof is on the other side, Mr Bacon had 119 Votes, Mr Whitstones 117, but on a Scrutiny the Vice-Chancellor thought fitt to disallow 3 of Mr Bacon's Votes, viz Hanson's, Thirlby's and Say's, and to allow the whole number of Mr Whitstone's votes, and to order him to be delcared duly elected accordingly.'
The remained of the document consists of a copy of the poss, with those not qualified to vote (for reasons given on the final page) marked with an asterisk (9 among Whitstone's supporters and 6 among Bacon's).
In the event Bacon's appeal was referred to a committee of the Privy Council which, on 25 July, found in his favour.
This document may be part, or copy of part, of the evidence submitted to the committee.
