Biographical / Historical
Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist.
In 1962 he gained a PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was also a research fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he remained under the Fellowship for Distinction in Science from 1969. Stephen Hawking returned to Cambridge and was elected Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 1979.
