Conditions Governing Access
Darwin College Archives is committed to providing access to its collections for the purposes of teaching, research and administrative reference. Access to collections must be facilitated by archival staff and materials are not to be removed from the archival storage facility without the express consent of the archivist and appropriate documentation for legitimate purposes only, such as reproduction or display. Access to collections is subject to statutory and legal limitations relating to data protection and copyright restrictions under the 2018 Data Protection Act, the 2000 Freedom of Information Act, and relevant copyright legislation. Records containing personal and special category data under General Data Protection Regulations will be closed on data protection grounds while the named individuals are (or may be) alive. Restrictions may also be placed on uncatalogued records and donated material in accordance with donors’ wishes.

Processing Information
These recordings were made of each talk within the Darwin Lecture Series, as they were delivered, from 1986-2011. Physical carriers bearing analogue recordings were transferred to the archives in each case.
Up to 1995 each lecture was recorded on cassette tape, capturing audio only, apart from Noam Chomsky's talk in the 1989 series which was also recorded on VHS. From the third talk in the 1996 series up to the first talk of the 2009 series, the talks were all recorded on audio only cassette as well as video formats, from 1996 to 2002 this was captured on VHS and then after it was on DVCAM. Only DVCAM recordings exist in the archive from 2009 to 2011.
Digitisation of recordings was undertaken in 2019-2025. Information on the quality of the digitised versions has been recorded in the catalogue entry for each physical carrier. Where there were both audio only and video recordings of the lecture series, the physical carriers with both audio and video one format has been digitised.
