Glass lantern slides taken on expeditions to Asia Minor, 1929 - 1932

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0269/DCPP/GUTH/6/2

Scope and Contents

81 glass slides in two wooden boxes, marked in hand on the outside 'Slides for talk on Asia Minor'. Includes index to (most of) the slides on three sheets. One box contained numbered slides and a corresponding indexed list, including additional slides which appears to correspond with some slides in the second (unnumbered) box. Some of these are similar or identical to plates in the published 1933 volume relating to the expeditions. Where possible, titles are those from the handwritten numbered lists (for the slides in the wooden box, which generally were found in the original listed order). The paper lists are numbered as DCPP/GUTH/6/2/82-84. The slides from number 40 onwards bore little resemblance to the order of the printed lists, presumably as these were selected from the series for a talk at a later date, perhaps, although some were identifiable from those reprinted in 'Monumenta Asiae Minoris Antiqua, Vol. IV'.

Biographical / Historical

After graduating from Cambridge, Guthrie took part in field expeditions to Asia Minor (Turkey) in 1929, 1930 and 1932 with William Moir Calder to record inscriptions on ancient monuments. The findings from these expeditions were published in 1933 in 'Monumenta Asiae Minoris Antiqua, Vol. IV, Monuments and Documents from Eastern Asia and Western Galatia', edited by W. H. Buckler, W. M. Calder and W. K. C. Guthrie (MUP, 1933).

Arrangement

Slides in wooden box are numbered and relate almost exactly to the paper index inside, in Guthrie's writing. Numbers on the list extend beyond those housed in the box and appear to relate to the second, cardboard box, although the order of these appear to be out of order. An attempt has been made to restore the original order of the second box, where possible, by cross-referencing with the handwritten numbered list loose in the wooden box and stuck inside its lid. The slides have also been compared with Plates in M.A.M.A. Vol 4 to aid identification. Slides have been catalogued in the original order of the wooden box with numbered slides, followed by the additional unnumbered box, from number 47 onwards.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
