His comments about early Christians adopting pagan symbols were mainly the fruit of his Asia Minor travels and conversations with Calder. It was difficult to distinguish between Christian or pagan monuments but Calder had made something of a hobby of this - they had come across a whole village of these during their Asia Minor expedition in 1932.
