Memorandum concerning a telephone call from Edward Llewellyn Pickles of the Contract Department of the Air Ministry, 1940-03-07
Scope and Contents
Pickles understands that Power Jets were not now in favour of BT-H going on with this development and asked Sporborg's views. HNS gave a short account of relations with Power Jets who were 'not practical manufacturing people' and so patience had been required. Power Jets had only recently made suggestions to David Randall Pye [Director of Scientific Research at the Air Ministry] about transferring the work from the BT-H factory to their establishment at Lutterworth, 'which is a disused foundry of ours' and because BT-H did not agreed that this was feasible Power Jets had told them that the Air Ministry had concluded that the work should be put in someone else's hands. Pickles understood that and knew about Power Jets' commitment to BT-H in regard to the first 100 machines. HNS gave reasons for BT-H being best equipped for carrying on the work although not at present having the facilities to do 25 or 50 engines a week. Further disparaging remarks about the manufacturing inexperience of Frank Whittle and Lancelot Law Whyte; invitation for Pickles to visit BT-H and assess their capability. Pickles, who had been handling contracts with BT-H for a number of years thought this unnecessary but regretted the difference of opinion between the two companies. He assumed that 'the real trouble was that Power Jets Ltd were looking upon this as a means of floating a new Company, which might or might not be advantageous to them, but from the Air Ministry point of view it would be better if work continued along the lines which had already been laid down.' HNS has not yet received a reply from Air Vice-Marshal Tedder.
