Scope and Contents
Mention of James Porter, Edward John Routh, Edward William Cory and George Crisp [the last three all B.A. 1854 and presumably tutored by Tait and Steele]. He deplore's Tait's attempt at Ingoldsby and writes verses about an offer of employment to Tait including references to Frances John Chiddell [matr. 1853] and John William Taylor [B.A. 1851]. Account of a visit to London, including a failure to visit John Morison Snody [B.A. 1852].
Playing chess with Samuel Blake Burrell [admitted 1852, B.A. 1857] and Thomas Harlin [admitted 1852, B.A. 1856].
'As to our book [Treatise on the dynamics of a particle, first published 1856], it seems to be as much 'in nubibus' (so to speak) as those infernal nebulae that no telescopes can resolve.'

Biographical / Historical
William John Steele was admitted a pensioner at Peterhouse, May 16, 1848. Son of the Rev. James, of Stranorlar, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Born Sept. 16, 1831. [At Glasgow Univ., 1844-7; M.A. 1847.] Matriculated Michaelmas 1848; Scholar, 1849; B.A. (2nd Wrangler and 2nd Smith's prize) 1852. Fellow, 1854. A successful private tutor. Author (with P. G. Tait), 'A Treatise on the Dynamics of a Particle'. Died in college, Mar. 11, 1855, of consumption; buried in Little St Mary's churchyard. (T. A. Walker, 495.)
