Found in 34 Collections and/or Records:
Observations from Cook's last voyage, 1778-12-26 - 1780-08-18
Observations of equal altitudes of the sun, made with the astronomical quadrant, for finding the rate of the timekeeper [K1], 1776-10-24 - 1776-11-21
Preceded by a note on setting up the observatory and on taking the observations [RGO 14/60: 14v] and followed by a table of comparisons of the timekeepers and clocks; signed by Captain Cook and James King. The remainder of the volume is blank.
Observations of the going rates of the two timekeepers, 1772-07-10 - 1775-07-30
Observations on HMS Resolution, 1772 - 1775
Observations made on board HMS Resolution during her passage to the South Seas on the expedition led by Captain James Cook.
Observations on Point Venus in the island of Otahitee [Otaheite/Tahiti], 1773-08-26 - 1773-08-31
These include daily observations; observations of the moon’s distance from the sun; observations on the dip of the magnetic needle; observations for the variation of the compass; observations on the tides; observations for the going of the two clocks; observations for the going of Mr Kendall’s watch; and observations for the latitude of Point Venus.
Observations on Point Venus in the island of Otahitee [Otaheite/Tahiti], 1774-04-22 - 1774-05-10
These include daily observations; Azimuths of the sun; lunar observations; observations for the line of collimation of the quadrant; observations for the latitude of Point Venus by Hadley’s Quadrant; observations for the dip of the needle; observations for the going of the clock; observations for the going of Mr Kendall’s watch; and observations for the latitude of Point Venus.
Table of the daily rates of Kendall's first watch, 1786-11-30 - 1787-04-26
Trials of H4 and K1 and K3, 1770 - 1776
Comparison of Harrison 4 and Kendall I from 19 March 1770 until 15 February 1773, when Kendall I was not used. John Arnold's watch was used as a comparison from 27 July to 13 December 1774, and Kendall I was used once more from 1 August 1775. The Harrison 4 observations end on 1 September 1775. Kendall I and III are compared for 22 April - 11 June 1776.
Trials of Harrison's chronometers, 1766 - 1771
Observations and comparisons during the trials of John Harrison's chronometers (H1, H2, H3 and H4) and Kendall I, with mean solar time, 1766-1767, and the rating of the Royal Observatory transit clock, 1771. The volume is comprised largely of tables of measurements, with some descriptions of how the results were achieved.
