Observations from Cook's last voyage, 1778-12-26 - 1780-08-18
Scope and Contents
Tabulated observations for the voyage, including records of the time by the watch or timekeeper, the apparent time, observed altitudes and lunar distances, estimates of latitude and longitude, magnetic variation, barometer and thermometer readings, and additional remarks.
Reference is often made to the instruments used (including instruments by John Dollond, Jesse Ramsden, John Bird and Gowan Knight, and timekeepers by Larcum Kendall), and who made the observations (including Cook, Clerke, King, Bligh, Vancouver and Gilbert).
Occasional additional remarks record the location of the ship and whether the observations were taken at sea or on shore. Marked onshore locations include Hawaii in January 1779 [RGO 14/61/1: 5r], Kamchatka in April 1779 [RGO 14/61/1: 12v], Macau in December 1779 [RGO 14/61/1: 24v], Pulo Condore [Côn Đảo Island, south Viet Nam] in January 1700 [RGO 14/61/1: 26r], and False Bay, Cape of Good Hope in April 1780 [RGO 14/61/1: 30r]. The final observations were made at sea on the return journey to England.
There is no mention of the death of Captain Cook on 14 February 1799.
