Third son of George Otto Trevelyan and his wife Caroline. Younger brother of R.C. Trevelyan. Married Janet Penrose, a historian in her own right, and had two children, Mary Caroline and Charles Humphrey, the latter of whom became a fellow of King's.

Fellow (1898-1903) and master (1940-51) of Trinity College, Cambridge. CBE, 1920. Publications include, 'Clio, a Muse' (1913), a trilogy on Garibaldi (1907-1911), 'History of England' (1926) and 'English Social History' (1944).
