Additional information is given on the caption: ‘About midway between Napier and Lake Taupo, New Zealand. Contains a hotel at which the Napier and Tauranga coach stops one night, and a stockade, with small detachment of the Armed Constabulary’.

Additional information on the caption states: ‘This bridge carries the Addington and Kowai Railway over the River Waimakariri, in the provincial district of Canterbury. The bridge has a total length of 627 feet, made up of 19 spans of 33 feet each. The contract was let on the 21st April, 1871, and the work completed on the 16th November of the same year, at a cost of £4,400’.
