Waipawa, Provincial District of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, 1876
Scope and Contents
359 x 266 mm. A view looking across fields towards a combined road and rail bridge. In the foreground stand two figures with a horse, while beyond the bridge is the small town of Waipawa. Additional information is given on the caption: ‘Pastoral country through which runs the Napier-Manawatu Railway. The bridge over the river has a total length of 1,495 feet, comprising 24 spans of 60 feet, two of 14 feet 6 inches and two 13 feet. The roadway, having a clear width of 12 feet, is carried on the 60 feet spans between the combined trusses, the lower chords and tension rods being of wrought iron; the lower members of New Zealand timbers; the piers ???. The bridge was completed 1st September, 1876. It was designed by John Carruthers Esq, Engineer in Chief of New Zealand, and built by Mr. Donald Ross, Contractor’
