Bell makes mention several times in his letters and diaries of taking photographs and many of the prints in the collection are evidently snapshots taken by him or by someone using his camera. Some professional work is included in the albums, the two most prominent photographers being Alfred Lobo (Uganda) and Jose Anjo (Dominica). In addition, Y3011F contains work by such well-known London photographers as Elliot and Fry, Maull and Fox,...

Scope and Contents This porcelain statue bears the tag, ‘Found in ruins of St. Pierre, miraculously preserved 1902’. It was recovered from the ruins of St. Pierre, Martinique, in June 1902, by Sir Hesketh Bell, Administrator of Dominica, who visited immediately after the eruption of Mt. Pelée, ‘To our intense surprise, we found that this image was almost entirely undamaged, the hands and feet only having been broken off. This was a really an amazing thing, as it lay almost completely covered by big stones and...
