Biography

Thomas Sykes Wyatt, known as Tom, was born in Yorkshire in 1907. He was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and was the first Esmond Scholar at the British Institute in Paris.

Wyatt joined the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) in 1934 as Chief Examiner for French. He briefly acted as an administrative officer before leaving UCLES to serve in the Second World War. Wyatt served in the Royal Air Force, first as a Pilot Officer and later as a Flight Lieutenant.

Wyatt returned to UCLES after the war and became Assistant Secretary in 1948. In 1961 he became Secretary of UCLES, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. During this time, Wyatt was also a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College.

Tom Wyatt and Hermine Hattersley married in Cambridge in 1937. They had a daughter, Caroline, born in 1945.

Tom Wyatt died on 07 May 2004.
