Biography

Herbert Richard ‘Dick’ Beck joined UCLES in 1967 as an Assistant to the Secretaries. He was appointed as an Assistant Secretary in 1971, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. Beck was also Subject Officer for Classical Subjects, and during some of his time at UCLES was responsible for dishonesty and hardship cases. Beck was also Senior Proctor of the University in 1971.

After his official retirement Dick Beck continued to work for UCLES on an ad hoc and voluntary basis, dealing with historical enquiries. His work highlighted the need for formal management of the archives, which was established in 1996. Beck continued to work on archival enquiries on an informal basis until his death in October 1997.

Scope and Contents The collection comprises documentation compiled by Mr Beck with some input from Anne McKane, Personal Assistant to J L Reddaway (General Secretary 1982-1992). It incorporates documents relating to his management of the archives and responsibility for historical queries and includes old archive catalogues and museum documents complied by Mr Beck’s honorary archivist predecessors.
